Removing Plastic From Our Supply Chain

While sometimes plastic is a necessary medium, we’ve been on a journey to reduce the amount we use in our supply chain. Plastic can cause a lot of harm to both people, and the environment. Chemicals in plastics get absorbed by humans and marine life through food and water, having a detrimental effect on both.

Here are a few of the things we’ve focused on improving:

How We Are Removing Plastic From Our Supply Chain

Here are a few of the things we’ve focused on improving:

Single Use Product Bags

The vast majority of our products have never been single poly bagged (individually wrapped in plastic). A small number products used to be single bagged due to their higher price and being more susceptible to damage during shipping. However we have now eliminated this practice so no garments are now being delivered single bagged.

Duster Bags

Duster bags (carton liners) appear inside the shipping carton to protect the garments from the elements during transportation. We have now completely removed duster bags from our cartons. We started removing these in 2019 from all our production in China and we are now doing this with all production from Bangladesh. For white or easily damaged goods we have transitioned into using certified EN13432 biodegradable and compostable bags.

Garment Tags

Our socks, underwear and belts are moving to a FSC cardboard hook where the garment hangs on a clothing rack in stores. Also, swift tags are a commonly used element in clothing. A swift tag is a small plastic tag that binds products together (commonly used with socks). We are in the process of eliminating all swift tags, so no products will land with these tags moving forward.

Retail Bags

We have never used single use plastic bags as store bags, and we will continue to do this. All of our paper retail bags are moving Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) approved.

Swing Tags

We no longer use metal eyelets in any of our swing tags. Though not plastic and a seemingly small change, they account for a substantial reduction of unnecessary waste year to year. All these small touch points where material appears in our supply chain helps reduce its use as we continuously evaluate where we can reduce, reuse or remove elements where possible.

Recycled Courier Bags

We have made the transition of swapping courier bags made out of virgin polyester for ones that are made out of recycled polyester. While this isn’t removing plastic from our operations, it is reducing our use of a non-renewable resource and instead using waste.

Carton Tape

Changing from standard cellotape on our cartons to paper tape. This was implemented in all factories and in our own warehouses by the end of last year. This is a small change but makes the cardboard easily recyclable.

Warehouse Pallets

Traditionally cartons arrive stacked on pallets and wrapped in plastic film. We have removed the plastic shrink wrap from our pallets and all products have arrived without the plastic wrapping from 2020 onwards.
